    Cookie!
The famous Cookie (of monkey and pomatomas fame) was in Boulder today giving a day of lessons.  I took her "Creating Stitch Designs" class, and my mind is totally blown.  It was all about how different stitches act, in combination, in the knitted fabric as a whole, etc.  So much that makes total sense, but that I never in the world would have come up with on my own.  Caution, pic heavy... )

But there's no money to be made in breastfeeding!
     http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/30/AR2007083002198_2.html?nav=rss_email/components

The Department of Health and Human services toned down breastfeeding ads, using ads that they were told wouldn't work, to appease the formula companies.

    Advertisement: Hobart Hucklebuck
One of my neighbors has just published a children's book.  (Jennifer--Joy's husband).

"Things are not as they should be in Pennywhistle. Enchanted toasters are not toasting, enchanted sprinklers are not sprinkling and Hobart Hucklebuck's origami messenger birds are suddenly attacking him. Someone seems to be draining the power from all of the enchanted items in the village. But who could it be and why have they implicated Hobart's grandfather? "The Misadventures of Hobart Hucklebuck" follows Hobart and his friends, Specks Spacklethack and Rosie Rumpleskirt, as they try to solve this mystery and free Hobart's grandfather from the Tower of Tribulation on Mumblemonk Mountain. The trio's investigation into the mysterious happenings on Druid Lane gets them into hot water more than once and ultimately brings them dangerously close to disaster not only for themselves, but the entire village of Pennywhistle."

There's an excerpt here: http://www.hobarthucklebuck.com/Excerpt%20from%20Hobart%20Hucklebuck.htm, and it's available on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Misadventures-Hobart-Hucklebuck-Stan-Swanson/dp/0978792521

It's described as sort of a kinder, gentler Harry Potter, geared at 8-12 year olds.  I haven't heard the whole thing, but Joy's been reading it to Katherine at daycare, and Katherine loves it.

    Grammar-type folks
    In this sentence:

"The importance...depends on [ones] frame of reference..."

Should that be "ones" or "one's"?

Holy carp.  The skies just literally opened up here.  Rain came pouring down in sheets; hail was bouncing everywhere, thunder, lightening.  The hail seems to have mostly stopped, but the parking lot outside is flooded and getting worse--it's just coming down too fast for the drain to handle.  It looks like it snowed outside--there's a good half-inch of hail on my windowsill.  And the rain is still pouring down.

    [knitting] Socks
Completed 2-3 weeks ago, finally getting around to posting it!

Knitty's Broadripple socks, using a Red Heart yarn (but I don't have the ball band here, so I'm not sure exactly what it is. I can comment later if anyone wants to know.) on size 2 dpns.  I started out making them for me, but my gauge was off enough that they ended up fitting Katherine instead.  Really, really pretty, and a very easy pattern.

    Fun with Surveys
I often receive marketing surveys.  They're usually pretty straight forward:  "did you buy xxx in the last six months; if so tell us all about it" or "are you planning to buy a car in the next year?".

But I got one recently that just had my mind boggling.  Someone actually paid to have these questions put on a marketing survey?

Click on them each a few times to make them large enough to read.

    Meme

How many times has someone on your friends list posted about something and you were really confused, but you didn't want to ask because you knew you SHOULD know? How many times have you felt 'guilty' asking a close LJ friend a question that should be 'obvious'?

    Well, here's your chance.

If you've missed a few things, missed an entry and are confused, ask me any thing. Even something EXTREMELY basic, like where I live! I'm not allowed to get even slightly irritated at any of the questions - we've all missed things before. In turn, though, you must repost this in your own journal. ;)

Ok, feel free to ignore the last sentence.

    What we did last night....
Intrepid readers may remember that Katherine received horsebackriding lessons from my parents this past Christmas.  Now that the snow has finally melted, we were able to start....

    BIG sigh of relief
We have been trying for WEEKS (well, months really, but only seriously in the past few weeks) to get a revised manuscript out the door.

    It went out today.

With me as 10th Author.  :)

As it's a revision, we expect to hear very shortly (within a week) that it's accepted.

    Me:  "It's groundhog day today."
Katherine:  "Oh."  *thinks for a minute*  "So, does that mean I have no school?"

    Oopsie...

We have a preschool in our building, and one of the four-year-olds just pulled the fire alarm.  Poor girl is downstairs crying, afraid that the fireman is going to arrest her.  :)

The preschool teacher asked that when the fireman comes, he come talk to the whole class about why you don't pull fire alarms (so that the girl doesn't feel quite so singled out).

The good news is that everyone in the office actually got out of the office!  Last time I had to practically wrestle people to leave the building.  (I'm the "safety officer" for the floor).  It was a tornado warning, and I had to beg my boss to please, at least not sit next to the huge plate glass window in his office.

    He's back...
and according to him, the interview went fine.  He's not hugely excited, though he may be protecting himself from disappointment.

    Vibes for DH, please...
...he's off to another job interview.

I am so tired of snow.  (another 4-6 inches, most likely).

I am also very tired of using vacation time, which is what needs to be done when I drive for an hour and only make it 2 miles.  :(

And they're saying there might be another storm next Friday.  My parents are due to come in on Wednesday, and leave on Saturday.  Let's see if they actually get here this time.

    Huh. Look at that.

Turns out I can knit a Sarah-sized mitten in the time it takes the Broncos to lose horribly.

(the one on the left had already been tried on, etc.  It's not really bigger than the other one.)
